Headaches

What causes headaches in the first place?

One of the most common headaches is Chronic Tension-Type Headaches (CTTH). Dysfunction of the myofascial system of the head and neck musculature is often the culprit of tension-type headaches. This dysfunction can result in trigger points. Active trigger points are typically painful and can be palpated (felt by the practitioner) to determine the symptomatic points to treat.

These head and neck muscles often develop trigger points related to CTTH: masseter, sub-occipital muscles, temporalis, sternocleidomastoid, upper trapezius, levator scapulae, etc. You may be asking yourself, what causes trigger points? There can be many causes of trigger points, but they often are the result of poor posture, stress, and acute or chronic muscle injury.

Chiropractic Treatment Methods for Headaches

Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments increase the joint range of motion in the neck, where tightness and stiffness are palpated upon a chiropractic examination. In some cases, chiropractic adjustments to the thoracic (or mid-back) region are utilized to relieve tension around the neck and upper back, an area where stress often accumulates. Our office utilizes multiple adjusting techniques for added comfort.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is also an excellent treatment option for headaches, especially when trigger points are present. Manual therapy helps to relieve trigger points by using various treatment techniques to induce muscle relaxation and pain relief.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is often a painless and effective procedure for headaches. This treatment technique uses very fine filiform needles to penetrate the skin, resulting in muscle relaxation, increased microcirculation, and nervous system regulation. Check your chiropractors licensing and certifications to ensure the highest quality outcomes.

Posture Correction and Stretching Exercises

We often provide tips for posture correction when necessary. Strengthening of the proper muscles is also essential to stabilize the head and neck musculature to prevent trigger points, pain, and dysfunction from occurring in the future.
